Ben Stokes – On Top of the World !

The ICC World Cup 2019 is finally over, and the final was absolutely an amazing as well sentimental match between England and New Zealand. The breath-taking match literally held viewers on their seat with a nail-biting finish. With scores tied in regulation after 100 overs, the match went into a Super Over. With the most astonishing, fortuitous, and preposterous climax, Even the Super Over ended up in a tie and England finally got to lift the World Cup trophy for the first time after more than four decades. In all these crazy moments, there was a star player who cemented his legacy and will forever be remembered for his innings. Yes, we are talking about Ben Stokes.

How can we forget the finals of the 2016 T20 World Cup match played in Kolkata, India between England and West Indies. It was probably a professional low-point for the all-rounder Ben Stokes. As the West Indies went into the last over, with a target of 19 runs. England was in the driving seat until Carlos Braithwaite hit four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes. The moment left Ben Stokes literary in tears. England’s defeat was dramatic, but the only person who got blamed for it was Ben Stokes. It was probably a career low for him. The question on everyone’s mind was that will the English fans who were then deprived of any major victories ever forgive him.

If that was not enough, something worse happened, which almost threatened his career. The 28-year-old player missed a game in 2017-18 because of a pending investigation involving him in a fight in Bristol which had left a man in hospital with facial injuries. Later on, he was found not guilty.

Ben Stokes was determined to comeback and comeback big. His innings at Lord’s on 14th July 2019 was key in England winning their maiden ODI World Cup after a wait of 44 years. England was struggling to chase 242 before Ben  Stokes and Jos Buttler got them back in the game. Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten 84 off 98 balls to help England tie the match. He then scored 8 in the Super Over which also ended in a tie. England went on to win the match based on the boundary count.

This match had many remarkable moments, and one of them was when Ben Stokes was awarded six-runs as overthrow as he inadvertently deflected the ball to the boundary. This overthrow literally changed the course of the game and led to the tie in the end. According to team-mate Jimmy, Ben asked the umpires to take away the four overthrows. When asked about this, Ben said, “about that, I apologized to Kane (Captain of New Zealand’s team) many times. It’s not how you want to end up. I also said to Kane that I’ll be apologizing for the rest of my life for this.”  When asked about bowling, Ben Stokes joked saying, “I definitely wasn’t thinking about bowling in the Super Over after the last time (Kolkata Match).”

The captain of the team Morgan describes this victory as “history” for Ben Stokes specially after the Kolkata match. According to the captain, a lot of careers would have been ended after facing the nightmare in Kolkata.

Ben Stokes was a key contributor for England in the World Cup, with five half-centuries scoring  465 runs in 11 games at an average of 66.42.

In this moment of pride, victory, and glory, Ben Stokes chose to praise England’s new sensation Jofra Archer. He said, “The talent Jofra got is incredible, and he’s shown on the world platform that how good he is.”

Ben Stokes was declared the “Man of the Match “for his contribution in the finals. With a World Cup medal around his neck, he proved himself “extraordinary” and “superhuman” as Morgan described him. Now that’s a massive comeback! And he is definitely on top of the World!
